DIN 1.2083 Cold Work Tool Steel is a medium carbon, air-hardening tool steel that is characterized by a combination of very good toughness, intermediate wear resistance, and excellent dimensional stability in heat treatment. Has been used for punches that operate in the 55 to 60 Rockwell C hardness range. More toughness than A2 or D2, More wear resistance that S7, very stable in heat treatment.

Applications

Punches, Drift pins, pneumatic tools, forming dies, blanking dies, chunk jaws, hammers, hot rolls, and hot/cold shear knives.


Heat Treatment

Annealing
820 to 870°C
Cool Slowly in furnace. This will produce a maximum Brinell hardness of 250.

Stress relieving
Approx. 650°C
Stress relieving to remove machines stresses should be carried out by heating to approx. 650°C, holding for one hour at heat, followed by air cooling. this operation is performed to reduce distortion during heat treatment.

Hardening
1020 to 1050°C / Oil, air
Harden from a temperature of 1020-1050^oC followed by oil, air or warm bath (approx. 400^oC.) quenching. Hardness after quenching is 61 HRC.

Tempering
150 to 400°C
