AISI / SAE 4145H grade is a low-alloy steel containing chromium and molybdenum as strengthening agents. The steel has good fatigue strength and impact toughness in low temperature, weldability and machinability.
This low-alloy steel is used in heat treated condition with 120 KSI minimum yield strength for oil and gas equipments of well drilling, wellhead, Christmas tree, etc.
820 to 870°C (1508 to 1598°F)
Slow cooling in furnace after soaking to achieve a uniform structure.
This process improves machinability and relieves internal stresses.
Hardness after annealing: max. 207 HB
840 to 880°C (1544 to 1616°F)
Cooling in still air after heating.
Refines grain structure and improves mechanical properties.
Typical hardness after normalizing: 170 - 220 HB
550 to 650°C (1022 to 1202°F)
Slow cooling in furnace.
Used after machining or welding to reduce residual stresses.
Holding time: 1 - 2 hours after through heating
820 to 860°C (1508 to 1580°F)
Water or oil quenching depending on section size.
Ensure uniform temperature before quenching.
Holding time: 20 - 40 minutes after temperature equalization
Obtainable hardness:
55 - 60 HRC (surface, depending on quenching conditions)
550 to 680°C (1022 to 1256°F)
Reheat immediately after hardening.
Cooling in air after soaking.
Holding time:
1 hour for each 25 mm of section thickness, minimum 2 hours
Tempering is used to adjust hardness and improve toughness.
Typical tempered hardness range:
20 - 35 HRC (depending on tempering temperature)
